Video of the week: the iron cross
Most kettlebell drills are optimally performed by incorporating the concept of full body muscle constriction. Unfortunately, that concept can be tough for newcomers to master after years of traditional "isolating" free weight drills. Sink those shoulder blades into your constricted lats and the iron cross will automatically require you to maintain a tight torso. Now, tighten your glutes, legs, feet, toes, and nose and experience the difference!

The 2nd Annual Punch Open Ketllebell Competition
In some parts of the world, kettlebell lifting competitions are a time-honored and respected tradition. These strength contests (known as "Girevoy Sport" in Russia... or simply "GS" in the States) are made up of 2 events, the Jerk and the Snatch. Competitors are allotted 10 minutes for each event to rack up as many reps as possible. The highest combined score wins and certainly indicates an impressive, well-rounded, balanced, functional strength.
Unfortunately, Americans are more aware of World Cup Soccer than Girevoy Sport!
A few years ago, Punch Gym hosted the largest US kettlebell competition to date. From the start, we wanted to make this event "open" to all competitors and spectators with the primary goal of promoting kettlebell lifting in the US. It was a smashing success and attracted folks from all over the states... as well as the local TV and newspaper media.
Lorraine Patten of NAKF (North American Kettlebell Federation) recently approached us about supporting the upcoming nationwide GS competition. We immediately agreed and will offer up Punch Kettlebell Gym for the event on September 9, 2006. We are excited to put on another show and welcome competitors and spectators from all ages and skill levels. Whether you are a grizzled GS athlete or have never actually touched a kettlebell, come on out and experience the action and community!
For those serious GS athletes, this is a NAKF sanctioned event and your last chance to qualify for the USGS Finals scheduled for March 2007. Registration for competitors is $25 and we need you to sign up early (as in RIGHT NOW) to ensure a great event. All spectators are welcome free of charge.
