Minute of Strength #14

In this issue:

Video of the week: the overhead squat

The overhead squat is a great move-- promoting both strength and flexibility.  Many people find it difficult and even painful on the first try.  This week, Anthony describes a very subtle hip rotation that will make this drill much more comfortable and ultimately "do-able" for all.

World's youngest kettlebell athlete

Jeff Waters, MOS Chief Editor, welcomed his 3rd child into the world on June 23, 2006.  Henry Thomas Waters weighed in at 7lb 7oz.  His Mom and sisters are doing great!  Henry is shown here lifting his own "mini-kettlebell", featuring a custom "Punch" paint job and autograph by Anthony DiLuglio himself.

Going "underground" with Zach Even-Esh

Zach Even-Esh is the owner of "Underground Strength Coach" (www.UndergroundStrengthCoach.com) and recently contacted us requesting an audio interview with Anthony to publish for his readers.  Zach and Anthony share many of the same ideals and attitudes towards fitness and quickly saw eye-to-eye.  Anthony subscribes to Zach's phenomenal online community and loves its potent, "in-your-face" approach and fantastic information spanning many unusual fitness genres.  At USC, you'll find tons of “no BS” information on unorthodox training methods such as kettlebell, sandbag, rock, rope, and strongman training.  Subscribers also enjoy exclusive audio interrogations… errrr interviews... with other world class trainers of Anthony's caliber.

MOS:  Zach-- in a few paragraphs, could you share with us the origins of this great resource?  Why on earth did you start this, who are you, who is USC for, what is your fitness philosophy, what can folks expect, and how do you subscribe?

ZEE:  First of all, brother, I’ve been a fan of you, AOS, and Punch Gym for a long time.  I am thrilled to be featured on your website!

I started Underground Strength Coach after Ryan Lee and I were talking about doing something with my “crazy” training methods.  He was asking me to describe what I do and I kept using the word “underground”… he pointed out how perfectly that one word described the whole philosophy.  Once we locked in on the “underground” concept, new ideas began to spiral out of control.  Ryan really helped me brainstorm the best way to present this information and USC would never have come to fruition without him.

I had grown tired of training in gyms. I hated the crappy tone, lazy members, horrible music, and the overall boring, energy-sapping atmosphere.  I decided to create my own gym… and a garage is all I had!  My past mistakes and new training research led me to start training young athletes.  It all grew so quickly.  I was soon writing about these wild workouts and athletes began flooding into my humble gym.

I’m all about the basics and HARD work… all while making training very fun and a bit unorthodox.  My site is for anyone who wants to learn about innovative training methods, training with “no rules”, and especially for those tired of the state of today’s mainstream fitness facilities.  You don’t need fancy machines to get fit.  If you have a towel and a loose cinder block in your backyard wall, I can help you get results.  Once your eyes are opened, you’ll realize that strength tools are all around you… you should see way more opportunities than excuses!

Everyone is welcome at USC… unless they have a big ego and don’t want to learn.  The USC is really a community, not just a website for information. People are networking, making friends, and creating local “Underground” training groups.  I’m passionate about the entire thing and absolutely love seeing people happy and “set free” from the barriers they once felt following more traditional training methods!

There is a small subscription fee to join the community, but your readers can take a free tour beforehand… just cruise on over to http://UndergroundStrengthCoach.com
